Long Clear Spans Change How a Roof Moves
Gymnasiums, field houses, and stadium concourse roofs are built with long clear-span structural systems to avoid interior columns breaking up the playing surface below, and that structural approach means the roof deck itself flexes and moves differently than a roof over a standard building with columns and bearing walls every thirty feet. Membrane and fastening systems on these roofs need enough flexibility to handle that deck movement without the seams working loose over repeated cycles.
Condensation From Inside the Building, Not Rain From Outside
Ice rinks and indoor pool facilities generate a moisture problem most commercial buildings never deal with: warm, humid air rising to meet a cold roof deck from below, condensing inside the roof assembly regardless of what the weather is doing outside. A rink roof that leaks in the middle of a dry week is almost never actually leaking from outside - it's condensation forming inside the assembly and finding its way down through the ceiling. Concession and kitchen exhaust penetrations add yet another wrinkle to stadium and larger rec facility roofs, since grease-laden exhaust air is corrosive to standard membrane and flashing materials in a way that regular building exhaust isn't. We spec heavier-duty flashing and grease-resistant materials around any concession-related roof penetration, and we check those zones on a tighter inspection interval than the rest of the field because they age faster.
Beyond the stadium scale, the smaller youth sports complexes and multi-field facilities around the county run tournament weekends that draw heavy weekend traffic several times a season, with quieter stretches in between that make good roofing windows.
